The Power of One Step: A Personal Reflection

If anyone really knows me, they know that I’m an overthinker—always in my head. And to my fellow overthinkers out there, you are not alone ✊🏽. Don’t get me wrong, we may share this trait, but it’s not always a good place to be. Oftentimes, we think ourselves out of ideas or situations that could have propelled us to greater heights, or we could have reached our goals much sooner. Like I mentioned in my first blog post, I thought of taking photos of Abaco after Hurricane Dorian and documenting the development process, but I overthought it and talked myself right out of it. But hey, I’m not here to harp on the bad. It’s about realizing the issue and working on improving it.

For my non-overthinkers, what is something within you that you just don’t know how to shake? Maybe it’s procrastination, disorganization, or fear.

And fear is a big one. When you saw that word, did an immediate thought come to mind? If it did, is it something you’re fearful of? Full transparency—one of my fears is the fear of failure. Last year, I had the idea of creating my blog. I started it, and I’m creating posts every now and then, but I fear it’s not good enough, so I hide behind not sharing it with others or not posting every week as I intend to. Silly, right? But it’s the honest truth. Until I had a much-needed conversation (which seems to happen when you least expect it and with someone you least expect it from—thank you). This person provided some much-needed words of encouragement and questions that shifted my gears. As he mentioned, “it’s time to have a funeral for that fear” and I’m happy to say that I have started to dig the 6-foot hole. It is a day-to-day process, but most times, it just takes that one step. What’s holding you back from reaching your true potential, your true self?

So, on those days when fear may sneak back in, I will look back at this post and the small steps I continue to take and shake it off. My hope is that if there is something holding you back, this post will inspire you. If not, and you know someone who may need to hear this, share it with them.

As I’ve learned from a timely video that was recently shared with me by another amazing friend—you may never know the impact that you can bring to someone and sometimes all it takes is the impact of one. If you would like to watch the Ted Talk, you can find it here.

Wherever you are, take a drive to your favorite spot, park, and enjoy the solitude of you and Mother Nature (depending on where you are, but mainly you). Take deep breaths in and out, and enjoy the silence (possibly) around you. Enjoy… being. Enjoy… you.
