To my incredible ladies: Shouldn't every day be our day? Well, until then, today, March 8th, we are celebrated internationally. Sound off the sirens, sound the big 'ting! imitates horn noise
Full transparency, I knew I wanted to craft a post for Women’s Day, but when it came time to put pen to paper (technically fingers to keyboard), the words didn’t flow as they usually do. I find it challenging to talk about myself, so how do I capture the essence of a day dedicated to…well, me?
While editing some photos for a friend of The Long Neck Women, a community known for their strength and resilience, inspiration struck and the song “I Am Woman” by Emmy Meli played in my mind. It reminded me of the days when it was the first song I'd blast during my drive to work...yes, I had to remind myself of who I was and am before stepping foot into the day. My favorite part of the song? The opening line: “I am woman, I am fearless, I am sexy, I am divine.” If you’ve never taken a moment to reflect on your strength as a woman, now's the time. Have 4 minutes to spare? Take a listen — Youtube: I Am Woman.
We are procreators; our bodies change and create life within nine months. That alone is mind-blowing! But wait, there’s more. Consider the strength and resilience we exhibit daily as we navigate a world that often criticizes our appearance, choices, and ambitions. How about our ability to thrive in male-dominated spaces and perform tasks traditionally reserved for men? Or the daunting task that we have to “show up” for others and the world instead of just for ourselves. Let us remember the women who came before us who fought for our rights and the achievements that have been made over the years. Let us continue to stand up for ourselves, one situation at a time.
We are…you are extraordinary in so many ways and worthy of nothing less than perfection. Queens, I hope that you see that. If you don’t receive your flowers on any other day, I hope that you do today. And as a reminder from the exquisite Queen herself, Maya Angelou:
I’m a woman
Phenomenally
Phenomenal woman,
That’s me.
To my fellas: My only ask is that you see us as who we show up as. Treat us as we should be treated, whether it be a stranger, a lover, or a friend. No chivalrous deed goes unnoticed, no compliment unheard. Together, let's continue to uplift, empower, and celebrate the incredible women in our lives... not just today, but every day.
Happy International Women's Day!
